The Bright Sadness of Lent

Bright Sadness is the dominant mood of Lent - our journey with Jesus to Easter’s Resurrection Joy. The Ash Wednesday service reflects this Bright Sadness. We gather together to repent of our profound self-centeredness (sadness), but Christ comes to us in the eucharist to give us new life (brightness). We kneel to receive ashes on our forehead in the sign of the cross (sadness), but the cross that marks us is that of Love-in-the-flesh (brightness).
