Reflection Quotes:

O Lord, help me not to despise or oppose what I do not understand. - William Penn

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. - Apostle Paul, Romans 5:8-10

Oh, if we knew He lived—yes, knew that He was here— knew that He was close to us, that His heart never forgot us and His eyes were never closed upon us— we would be swift in the ways of duty and a stammering tongue would begin to speak! And the now unhallowed silence which spoils the Church and robs her of many a triumph, would be broken by our willing testimony and by our cheerful song! The best cure for the dumb devil that sometimes possesses us, is a belief in the living and pleading Savior! - Charles Spurgeon

Questions:

  • What fear or fears paralyze you life? How do they create a wall or barrier to faith and a relationship with the risen Jesus?
  • Read Mark 16:1-8 (consider reading the other resurrection accounts Matthew 28:1-15 Luke 24:1-12 and John 20:1-18). How do people react in these accounts? How do they feel?
  • Read them again. What is your reaction? How do you feel? What are your questions?
  • Which category would you put yourself in: antagonistic toward Christianity; skeptical agnostic; skeptical Christian aka doubting Thomas (see John 20:24-29); weary disciple; devoted follower? How does the resurrection challenge you? What action is it calling you toward?
  • How is resurrection good news for you? How is it good news for Oakland?
